John George was the only son of Joseph Henderson (1896-1955) and Florence Ellen (née Alsop, 1901-1966), and was born in Burton upon Trent on 6 May 1927. A sister, Rita, was born in 1939 but died within a year. In 1939 the family was living at 20 Gravel Pit Lane in Spondon and were still there in 1945 when John was killed in an accident.
The Derby Daily Telegraph of 9 June 1945 reported that he was killed as a result of a fall from a motor lorry while returning from a 36-hour leave. He had joined the Fleet Arm six months previously. He was buried in Spondon Cemetery on 7 June 1945.
